The surgical world has evolved into using threads that can now be inserted without requiring any incisions. Basically, Dr. Berger is just using a needle and a thread. This works because of the design of the threads and also because of the fact that these threads are now fully absorbable. Threadlifts can have an excellent effect in the appropriate patient, either alone or in conjunction with other treatments to bring both a lifting effect as well as the stimulation of collagen. This causes an improvement to the soft tissues of the face where the threads are placed.
One type of thread that is used in Dr. Berger’s practice today is the Novathreads
Novathreads can be easily deployed by a micro-invasive technique and are fully absorbable. The procedure takes only about 20 minutes and is easily be repeated. It is also considered a very safe procedure, with no associated bruising or swelling. Only a small amount of local anesthetic is needed, and the procedure is basically pain-free, with immediate results.
As the threads absorb, the body simultaneously creates a suspending rope of collagen, which replaces the need for the thread over time. This rope of collagen that is deposited around the thread ends up doing most of the lifting that the thread was originally providing. The effects can last six to 12 months. Although these threads have a shorter duration, the procedure is micro-invasive, and doesn’t require any anesthesia. The results are immediate and it can provide enhancement and rejuvenation for the appropriate patients.

Novathreads are made of synthetic absorbable polydioxanone (PDO) and provide a natural, painless lunchtime procedure which remarkably corrects loose and sagging skin. It’s one of the safest materials to be implanted in the body. Your skin fully absorbs it within 4 to 6 months and it won’t leave you with any scar tissue. PDO threads make the skin “heal” itself by creating new collagen, naturally.
Much like suspension cables, they are designed to hold up the skin in place, and provide a supportive structure that defies the effects of gravity and aging. The threads are fully absorbable, but that doesn’t mean that your skin won’t react to it. During the 4 to 6 months needed to fully absorb the PDO sutures (threads), your skin is also repairing itself around it. It’s controlled healing that is taking place underneath your skin.
Dr. Berger does two types of procedures with the Novathreads threads. The first one uses smooth threads to create a mesh (Nu-mesh) under the skin sort of like a #hashtag or a net. This serves as a foundation for new collagen production, which tightens the skin naturally from within providing natural results without any drastic change.
The other (Nu-lift) technique (using barbed threads) is used to produce a more dramatic and immediate result. These PDO sutures have tiny “barbs” which provide a grip underneath the skin. The threads are inserted the same way, except that they can be pulled in one or two directions creating instant skin repositioning. Just like the Smooth threads; the skin will then build new collagen which will secure the lift for the longer term.
This is also a micro-invasive technique, and these PDO threads are also 100% absorbable. However, they work in a slightly different way than the Novathreads. While Novathreads have tiny barbs that encage the soft tissues, the Silhouette Instalift Threads have tiny cones. These cones act like little trumpet heads, grabbing the tissue and creating a lifting effect. This thread evolved from the Silhouette Lift, which is a type of threading technique.

The PDO threads can be used almost anywhere on that body that the patient wishes to fix the appearance of sagging skin – even above the knee! Although they can be inserted almost anywhere, they are especially effective is the face and neck and jawline, areas that are notoriously difficult to treat through botulinum toxin or injectable fillers alone. The training session is for the face, not the body.
Complications are manageable and minor. Bruising is rare but remains the most frequent complication to occur with placement of PDO threads. Irregularity, asymmetry, and visibility of the threads are potential complications with the lifting sutures. These issues are generally managed conservatively and are short lived. Placement of Novathreads in the correct tissue plane avoids injuries to deeper structures.
