Beauty from the Inside Out: Why You Need Cholesterol

These days it seems like it’s impossible to ignore all the hype about cholesterol, and how we desperately need to lower it, but did you know that your body actually needs cholesterol? Contrary to popular belief, high cholesterol is not some sort of epidemic that is sweeping its way across the country. The truth is that for the most part, the average cholesterol numbers seen today have been the standard for quite some time. While it’s true that imbalanced cholesterol levels can be problematic, low cholesterol can possibly be even worse. Here’s a look at what your body does with cholesterol.

Food for beauty.

First off, cholesterol is required to build, maintain, and repair cells. Healthy cells equals a healthy body, and healthy skin cells have that extra glow. In addition, cholesterol also helps cells interact with each other, and they play an important role in nerve function. Low levels of cholesterol can effect everything from cancer to depression, but what about its most common association – the heart?

We’ve all heard that high cholesterol causes heart disease and other nasty problems. This is caused by low density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. This is where the high cholesterol hysteria kicks in. While it’s true that high LDL levels do indeed cause heart problems, our bodies are equipped to handle this. The body also produces high density lipoprotein (HDL) which actually controls the levels of LDL in our bodies. Most research shows that having low HDL levels is actually more dangerous than having high LDL levels. So rather than focusing on lowering LDL levels, we should be focusing on raising HDL levels.

What can you do to balance your cholesterol levels? The answer for that hasn’t changed; healthy diet and plenty of exercise is a good place to start. Detoxing is another great way to help your body maintain optimal cholesterol levels. Maintaining a healthy amount of cholesterol will not only make you feel better, it can make you look better and feel younger, too. After all, beauty starts from the inside out.
